THE PARISH NURSE MINISTRY

The ministry of a parish nurse is a health care ministry within the context of the life and mission of the church and community. The parish nurse is called to encourage each individual’s physical, emotional, spiritual and social wellbeing in terms of their relationship with God, family and neighbour. It is a ministry that emphasizes the wholeness of body, mind and spirit.

 THE HEALTH CABINET

In 2005 a Health Cabinet was formed. This cabinet advises and works with the ministry team and the Parish nurse.. The Health Cabinet plays a major role in developing, implementing and evaluating programs. Programs are planned in response to a congregational survey which was done in 2006.

The Health Cabinet has a broad focus, but primarily their goal is to lift up and encourage the healing ministry of Christ in the congregation and in the community.

 THE PARISH NURSE

The PN a Registered nurse who understands the issues related to the health care system and can speak the language that is sometimes necessary within the system.

A nurse who has some spiritual and theological background can address issues of body, mind and spirit in ways that other professional may not be equipped to do.  The Interchurch Health ministry, a non-profit group, provides support and education for the parish nurse and for the health cabinet in development of Health Ministries.

WHAT A PARISH NURSE DOES

The parish nurse focuses on health promotion and disease prevention which may include referrals, advocacy and coordination of medical services.

On behalf of the church the parish nurse may visit in homes, hospitals and nursing homes; facilitate wellness training sessions; hold wellness forums  i.e. blood pressure clinics, and put on programs of interest to many age groups. One-on-one counselling can be arranged. Confidentially is essential. Permission must be obtained before a referral to the nurse is made.

To arrange for a visit or a call, please leave your name and number @ (905)727-1935 ext 24

Matthew 9, 27-28 As Jesus left the house, he was followed by two blind men crying out, “Mercy, Son of David! Mercy on us! When Jesus got home, the blind men went in with him.  Jesus said to them, “Do you really believe I can do this?”  They said, “Why, yes, Master!”
