Mobility Foundation

The Mobility Foundation of York Region presented a $10,000 cheque to the Region of York’s Mobility Plus Operation in June. York Region Chair, Bill Fisch, accepted the donation for use in increasing transit capacity for people with disabilities in York Region. After the story appeared in the Era Banner, we asked Pat Plewman, chair of the Foundation, to tell us more about their work. She explained that they are “committed to improving mobility throughout the region.” They do this by raising funds and obtaining medical equipment for non-profit groups that serve the transportation and equipment needs of individuals with disabilities.

The Foundation started as an outreach program at Aurora United Church in 1999, when we received a donation, known then as “the Dream Fund”. After a process of analysis, the congregation decided to make $55,000 available to support mobility issues. Ten thousand dollars was to be used for the set-up and creation of the Mobility Foundation and the remaining funds were to be split in two. The Foundation’s mandate was to try to match the remaining funds with corporate and private funds, in order to buy a specialized vehicle for York Region Transit’s Mobility Plus Service.

The Foundation is also concerned with the individual equipment needs of people who are physically disabled as well as financially challenged. Last year the Foundation held a one-day used equipment drive in Aurora and collected more than $40,000 worth of gently used medical equipment. This equipment was donated to the Ontario March of Dimes, who matched the equipment to individuals with a specific need. Since that time other donations of equipment have been received.

Providing equipment to those who need it is a continuing project of the Mobility Foundation. Pat tells us there are wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes. commodes and hoists just sitting in people’s closets and cupboards. Anyone that knows of equipment in good condition that is no longer being used should contact Pat. An income tax receipt for larger items can be provided.

You can help! Ask your friends to see if they have usable equipment. Or—donate your time! Volunteers are welcome, especially those with fundraising experience. Donated funds can be earmarked for equipment or transportation, according to your wishes. More equipment drives throughout York Region are planned. Watch for details soon!

We are proud of what Pat and her committee have accomplished, and encourage everyone to support this worthwhile project.
