A meeting of the Aurora United Church congregation will be held on Sunday January 26, 2020 following the service of worship in the sanctuary to hear an update from the Affirming Congregation Committee and to vote on the Vision Statement.

For the past year and a half, the Affirming Congregation Committee has been working to create a path forward to becoming an Affirming Congregation. In that time, with direction from the national body overseeing Affirming communities, Affirm United, the committee has updated our Inclusive Marriage Policy, (approved by both Affirm United and our AUC Council); they have provided Affirming worship; Lunch & Learn event; brought information forward with the Affirming Table in the entranceway as well as information online, and was a strong presence at the Aurora Street Festival.

With input gleaned from the Lunch & Learn event, the Committee returned to their work to write an Affirming Vision Statement, which states the breadth of our welcoming and inclusive AUC community. That statement has been approved by Affirm United, and has also received unanimous approval by our AUC Council.

The next step in this process requires congregational approval of the Vision Statement, hence the meeting called for January 26th. If approved, the Committee will create a ‘Statement of Purpose’ which outlines how we see ourselves living out the welcome we profess. This will be shared with the congregation. The final step in the process is ‘the’ vote as to whether we will become an Affirming Congregation.

The Vision Statement is below and copies will also appear in our bulletins for consideration, January 26th.
