Welcoming Arms Spotlight 2024: 'It Could Be Any Of Us' - Welcoming Arms Fights Food Insecurity With Dignity

Bridging The Gap *Closed from July 17 - August 3, 2026*
Bridging the Gap is a place of friendship, hope, and a caring listening ear, where all are treated with dignity. This program is geared to support our visitors’ needs through connections to other community agencies and resources (ie medical, dental, housing, etc.) as well as providing toiletries, household supplies and food vouchers. We provide Clothes Closet vouchers to our visitors that allows them to access cost-free, gently used clothing.
This program is on a drop in basis on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9:30-11 am. Appointments are not required. Within a safe and informal setting, we offer our visitors opportunities to share their successes and challenges on a one-on-one basis with a volunteer.
Welcome Table
Welcome Table offers an in-person meal from 5:00-6:00 pm every Wednesday evening in Trinity Anglican Church Binions Hall.

Martha's Table
Martha's Table from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm on Thursdays from September- June at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Mosley Street, Aurora. Soup, sandwiches and dessert.
From July 2nd - September 3rd, a BBQ lunch will be available from 11:30-12:30 at the Aurora Cornerstone Church (390 Industrial Parkway South).
Meals Plus *Closed July 17 - August 2, 2026*
Welcoming Arms' newest program is “MealsPlus”. This program supports individuals and families experiencing food insecurity by providing nutritious frozen meals and connections to other community supports through our system navigation program. Toiletries, household cleaning supplies and Clothes Closet vouchers for access to cost-free, gently used clothing are also provided.
This drop-in program is open on Wednesday mornings from 9:30–11:00 a.m. Appointments are not required. Within a safe and informal setting, they offer our visitors opportunities to share their successes and challenges on a one-on-one basis with a volunteer. Eligibility requirements include being an Aurora resident and completing a yearly assessment.
This pilot project is made possible by the generosity of community donors. Many thanks to the organizers of the Aurora Hewy Christmas Classic for helping get this program up and running for 2026.

History:
Welcoming Arms started operation in October 2006. The concept originated through discussions between a number of the churches in Aurora as they looked at the needs of low income families in the town. The view of the church leaders was that the community could be better served if the churches’ resources were pooled somehow, in this way there could be more leverage gained from the financial and human resources of the churches. From these discussions Welcoming Arms was born.

Sudden illness can profoundly affect a person’s ability to earn a living, many who become ill are laid off, or forced to quit work because of the effects of treatment, leaving a family without food and necessities of life. 14% of seniors who live alone are living in poverty. Many of these people come to Welcoming Arms for assistance, food vouchers, YRT tickets, toiletries and a listening ear. Aurora United Church is in partnership with 5 other churches in supporting W.A., through financial assistance, volunteers, and providing toiletries each week.
